Allotment Diary February 2009

Saturday 28th February
Me, mum and dad went to the allotment for about half 9 and didn't leave until after 4. We did lots of weeding on a couple of plots, harvested some beetroot that was hidden under some chard and composted some crops that were past their best. I tidied the strawberry bed a little and removed the old dead leaves before the new growth takes over again.

Tuesday 24th February
Mum and dad weeded on the top and bottom plots.

Saturday 21st February
Mum and dad went with compost and checked around after the high winds. Harvested leeks, parsnips, carrots, swede, turnips and salsify.

Sunday 8th February
Mum rubbed the shoots off the potatoes in storage in the garage. The chickens had some porridge and then warm mashed up pellets later. The weather is still very cold and icy with snow on the ground for over a week.
Me and dad went to a garden centre and bought onions and potatoes.

The onions were:

Red Baron
Sturon
Hercules.

The potatoes were:

First Early:
Pentland Javelin (1 bag of 16 or so tubers)

Second Early:
Nadine (1 bag)
Wilja (1 bag)

Main Crop:
Pentland Squire (1 bag)
Desiree (2 bags)
Romano (2 bags)
Sarpo Mira (2 bags)
Markies (2 bags)

Monday 2nd February
Me, mum and dad went to the allotment today as I took a days holiday due to the snow. We cleared about 5 inches of snow from the top of the greenhouse and took the opportunity to take some photographs. The chickens were a little bemused today and spent most of it perching and wandering around their shed.
