Allotment Diary September 2007

Sunday 30th September
Me and mum went down in the afternoon and planted out the spring cabbage and lettuce and covered most of them with wire cloches. We also dug up 2/3rds of a row of potatoes (Nadine).

Saturday 29th September
Me, mum and dad went down. We all weeded, I limed ready for spring cabbages and mum did some harvesting.

Tuesday 25th September
Mum, dad and I went in the morning for a couple of hours. We harvested orange and red chillies, beetroot, turnip, peas, carrots, sprouts, dwarf french beans, salad leaf and crisp lettuce, weeded around cauliflowers, salad leaf and lettuce area. Removed wire cloches from cauliflowers as they were pushing on the wire.

Thursday 20th September
Mum and dad went down in the afternoon. Dad mowed the grass and weeded. Mum weeded.

Tuesday 18th September
Mum & dad went to the plot, dad harvested quite a lot of potatoes he has finished the second early row now. Mum and harvested carrots, beetroot, turnip, salad leaf, tomatoes, french beans, peas, calabrese, some conference pears, a round cabbage, courgettes and the pumpkins (the plants were dying back so thought they must be ready, they are very heavy!) Both did quite a bit of weeding too. Took a lot of yellowing leaves from the bottom of the brassica plants. Dug up the calabrese as that has finished too.

Wednesday 12th September
Mum and dad went down mid morning and took lunch. Harvested french beans, calabrese, sprouts, courgettes, turnip, carrots, beetroot, tomatoes, crisp lettuce, salad leaf, peas and one strawberry. Dad filled the water butt using hosepipe as almost empty and watered where needed. Mum and dad barrowed the rest of the manure pile into the stillages, all three sections are now piled high. It looks much tidier by the fruit trees now.

Mum and dad went down in the morning and discovered that a roof pane and a side pane of glass in the lower greenhouse had been broken by a golf ball, which was still in the greenhouse. Dad tidied up the glass which seemed to be everywhere and measured to replace them. Dad then harvested Bottom plot beans, squash and leekssome more potatoes. Mum harvested french beans, calabrese, courgettes, carrots, beetroot and salad leaf. Mum did some weeding on the strawberry bed. After lunch dad found a piece of glass in the garage at home which was the correct size for the side pane and cut a piece of perspex for the roof piece. Mum and dad then went down again to fit the glass and perspex and then they tidied the greenhouse. Dad then took the black matting off the pallets that had been lids for the stillages and then modified the pallets and fitted them with wires to the stillages, so that they can easily be removed for side access. Mum weeded again on the strawberry bed and tidied some grass off the black matting.

Wednesday 5th September
Mum and dad did lots of hoeing, weeding around the plots, took the netting off the strawberry beds and put away, weeded most of the weeds on this bed. Tried to light the fire again. Tidied up the tomato plants and harvested tomatoes, beetroot, carrots and turnip.

Tuesday 4th September Mum and dad went to the plot, harvested courgettes, french beans, calabrese, salad leaf, the remaining sweetcorn, cleared that area and have blanched and frozen most of it too. Dad harvested a bucket of potatoes and did lots of tidying around the edges and burnt the fire again. Watered in greenhouses.
