Sunday
30th November
Today we decided to get a couple more hens that would give us the extra
eggs that we need. We went to a local farm having chosen to get two
light sussex at point of lay (18weeks old or there about). We let them
into the shed to get settled and then out into a small wire run within
the bigger run to try and let the birds get used to each other. When we
finally let them out into the main run there was some inevitable
pecking going on and the new birds hung out in the corner of the run.
They were eating and drinking though which was a good sign. When it got
dark they stayed outside the shed until we walked them down the run.
They piled into a corner to sleep underneath our older hens so we tried
to put them on the perch. They didn't seem happy on the 3ft high perch
and kept jumping down so we brought in a lower one from the outside run
for them and they eventually settled on that (having been placed on it).
