Allotment Diary February 2008

Tuesday 26th February
A pane of glass broke on the greenhouse in the garden as we have very gusty winds. Hopefully the ones at the allotment have held up against the wind!

Sunday 24th February
Day started with some ominous looking fluff strewn across the neighbours lawn. Our chickens were ok, but their rabbit was taken out of its hutch by the fox overnight. Glad we wired the chicken house shut last night (divine intervention made us do it)!
Went early to garden centre to get the "sweetheart" cherry tree that we saw yesterday. Discovered that nurseries are exempt from the sunday trading legislation so it is open at 8:30 am. I had no idea and have previously waited until about 11am to be sure they are open... but I guess no more.
In the late afternoon I decided to get some seeds planted in trays.
Tomato - Marzano 2, Golden Sunrise, Marmande, Garden Pearl, Tigerella, Red Cherry, Gardeners Delight and Ailsa Craig. 2 varieties from last year and one of the new variety packs that have come out.
Chilli Pepper (same as last year).
Golden Berry (pineapple flavoured berries like tomatoes).
Herbs - Fennel, Sage, Parsley, Coriander, Chives and Basil.

Saturday 23rd February
We went to some garden centres today to look at seeds and plants for home and the allotment. There were some seeds with 50% off so they were much better value than buying online. We saw a cherry tree that might be very good for the allotment at just £5 but needed to check its attributes online and in books before buying.
We also continued to build a run extension for the chickens (another 4x4 foot section.)

Friday 22nd February
Last night we left the run down on the chicken house because they appeared to have been ready to get up well before we were! It was warm as well at 9C overnight so they should have been ok and they were.
Still getting lots of eggs, has been either too wet or cold for the allotment apart from harvesting.

2nd Feb Snow on chicken house!
