Allotment Diary June 2008

Sunday 29th June
Me, mum and dad went at about 10am and mum continued weeding between carrots and parsnips while I weeded some more next to the salad leaf. Dad weeded on the top plot between the leeks.
I planted some more salad crops:
Lambs Lettuce Favor
Mizuna
Land Cress
Mustard Oriental Red
Lettuce Salad Bowl Mixed, All The Year Round and Balmoral
Rocket
Spinach Bordeaux
Leaf Salad Lettuce Mixed
Beetroot
Chard for full size plants to protect over winter

I also planted some more Basil as none survived the transplanting to the allotment. I then started to weed out some of the seedy grass that has come between the potatoes.
Mum harvested some more new potatoes which are certainly starting to fill up in size.

Saturday 28th June
Me, mum and dad went an hour or so before lunch and stayed until just before 5pm. Me and dad put up the 8ft posts that we had carried down the previous weekend and roped between them to support the raspberries. This looks very effective as the posts are not machined in any way, but fallen tree trunks taken from some woodland nearby.
Dad tied in the Raspberries to the ropes that we had strung out and then did plenty of weeding and hoeing near the brassicas on the top plot. Mum continued weeding between the carrots and parsnips. Me and mum harvested strawberries and I tried to position the runners so that we will be able to tell which are what variety later. We also harvested plenty of summer squash most of which are courgette related.
I also did more weeding on the bottom plot where I plan to plant some more salad and possible some more Celeriac.

Wednesday 26th June
Mum and dad went down late morning (took lunch) did lots of weeding, watered and lit fire.

Monday 23rd June
In the afternoon mum and dad went to the plot and put strings for the french beans to grow up. Weeded around the bean crops and some brassicas. Watered in the greenhouse and harvested potatoes, a courgette, salad leaf and radish.
I was back to work today and went to the station by bicycle. After work I went straight to the allotment along the Horbury cycle route. I spent about an hour weeding and then spaced out the kale and planted some more as well as planting some more turnips.

Sunday 22nd June
Me, mum and dad walked down the back over the stream and up the road carrying the 4 tree trunks that had fallen in the wind. I planted 4 purple sprouting broccoli out and the celeriac too. Dad did some weeding and watered in the greenhouses (with feed) and mum weeded and tidied around. We then covered the freshly planted brassicas with wire cloches to protect them. It is very windy and the trees and everything else are taking a bit of a battering.

Friday 20th June
Mum and dad weeded between the French beans. I continued to weed on the bottom plot near the salad leaves and also lifted two of the rhubarb plants that are very old (were on the allotment when we took it on.) Mum covered the strawberries with netting as they are beginning to ripen. Dad planted some radish and watered them in. I harvested the smaller garlic as the leaves had browned off and we don't want them to start rotting in the ground if it rains.

Thursday 19th June
Dad cut the grass while mum and I started weeding around the salad crops (which weren't visible for the weeds!) Dad weeded around on the top plot and slackened the wire support of one apple tree as the tree has grown so much it was getting tight.

Tuesday 17th June
Me and dad cut 8ft lengths from fallen trees in the grove to use as posts at the allotment for supporting raspberries at the allotment.
Me and mum went and harvested 2 plants worth of new potatoes and some radishes, watered and fed in the greenhouses and took out side shoots on tomatoes in one greenhouse.
