Allotment Diary January 2008

Thursday 31st January
We bought our seed potatoes today, slightly earlier than we have sometimes which means there was plenty of choice in the garden centres.
First Eary - Pentland Javelin
Second Early - Nadine and Wilja
Main Crop - Desiree, King Edward and Cara

Saturday 12th January
Me, mum and dad went to the allotment to harvest some more veggies and to take down the compost bucket. We harvested carrots, parsnips, sprouts, turnip, kohl rabi and cabbage. The composters were all warm and 2 have got rich dark material with lots of worms and woodlice etc working away finishing breaking it down.

Sunday 6th January
The chickens have started to lay. First thing this morning after opening up I noticed an egg when I was cleaning out the house! So exciting to get our first egg and it tasted delicious fried. Later on before lunch I went out to check again (probably for the 10th time today) and there was another in the other nest box! In the afternoon me and dad went down to the allotment and took the new compost container (a 5 gallon brewing bucket) which was much more convenient to transport and empty!
Before dark we gave the hens some wheat as a treat and some greens from the greenhouse which they thoroughly enjoyed as always! They have been getting treats most afternoons!

Friday 4th January
We moved then chicken house across the garden and tidied up after them. Dad attached the handles to the roof hatches and shaved some timber from the framing as they have become a little tight with the damp air outside.
